Dental fluorosis (also termed mottled enamel) is an extremely common disorder, characterized by hypo mineralization of tooth enamel caused by ingestion of excessive fluoride during enamel formation. In moderate to severe fluorosis, teeth are physically damaged. Teeth affected by fluorosis are not diseased. Fluorosis will not result in cavities or other dental problems. Most of the fluorosis treatment are aimed at masking the stains. Concerns about appearance can be addressed with whitening to remove surface stains and veneers or other procedures to cover the discoloration. In skeletal fluorosis, fluoride accumulates in the bone progressively over many years. The early symptoms of skeletal fluorosis, include stiffness and pain in the joints. In severe cases, the bone structure may change and ligaments may calcify, with resulting impairment of muscles and pain.
